Everything we read about Nantes suggested we should not bother to go there. When we arrived in St. Nazaire, called up for the lock, waited for 2 hours at the suggestion of the HM and were then told sorry they were full, we continued up the river. On the flood tide, the 28km trip took under 2.5 hours.
At Nante the river split and we took the left fork. The jetty (Belon Jetty) just before the bridge on the port side was swept by a fast tidal flow but easy to approach. It was secure, had toilets and showers, a locked access gate and was close to the center of the city. At night it was also quiet.
A very friendly and helpful man arrived later that evening, took our details and gave us a map and tourist information of the city and charged us just 59 Euros for 3 nights. We should have stayed at least a week. Nantes was a great place to visit and remains one of the highlights of our trip.
