St Eloi Church, a magnificent 16th century church – notice the many bullet scars and several massive chunks blasted out of its Gothic columns – a reminder of war’s dispassionate mauling.
The main square is devoted to the towns most famous citizen – Jean Bart, a 17th-century privateer. Captured by the British, held in Plymouth but then escaped in a rowing boat and sculled across the Channel to Brittany and freedom.
