Fiumicino (Rome) - Docking

There are many small marinas in the Fiumicino River as well as the very large, Porto di Roma Ostia, just south of the river entrance. The Fiumicino Canal also offers possible berths if the winds permit entry.

In strong onshore winds and with the ebb running in the river, steep breaking seas can exist from the 10 meter (32 ft) contour until well into the river. There are many moorings here, in the river and in the yards along each side. There are regular buses to Ostia Antica and Fiumicino.

Just 3.2 kms (two miles) north of the river is the Fiumicino canal, which offers lower-priced berthing (with buses to Rome). However, it is not advisable to enter the canal in on-shore winds above F3. It is very close to Rome’s very busy airport. There are two bridges – a lift (bascule) footbridge and a vertical-lift road bridge (thanks to Tom Walton for the photos).

The bridge opening times change regularly and Marina Constellation Nautica posts any changes on their website.  The following opening hours run from October 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020.

  • Monday, Thursday,  Friday and Saturday:  09:30 and 15:00
  • Sundays and holidays:  09:00 and 15:00

To allow the transit of the boats, exiting and entering from the sea and vice versa, it is necessary to lift the bridge in two successive phases, 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after the times indicated.

If you are early for the opening, you can wait on the right side of the canal.

The bridge height is 21 meters maximum.

There is a small marina on the south side of the Canal (Darsena Traiano), just before the bridges. As it appears very full, a prior reservation would be advisable.

The Cantiere Nautico Albula is on the north side of the canal beyond both bridges and has been recommended by a number of Noonsite readers. While facilities are basic with no frills, Max the manager speaks excellent English and is very helpful and friendly. Another recommendation by cruisers is Constellation Nautica nearby.

The areas for docking on the canal are not as picturesque as those in the river and walking around at night alone would definitely feel uncomfortable. It is however very convenient for visiting the centre of Rome city. The local Fumincino Bus (orange) costs 1€ to the Parco Leonardo train station. From here you can travel to the central city station of choice for 1.50 to 2.60 €.  The Cotral Bus (blue) runs to the Fumincino/Roma Airport regularly.

Fiumicino has a number of chandleries, sail makers and tradespeople available for boat work. Local provisioning was excellent with multiple supermarkets and local produce markets. Nice bulk wine shop in town.

The large marina di Roma at Ostia provides the easiest entry and all services, as well as good security.

Due to private issues, I had to leave my boat very hastily at the end of July 2018. Although I planned to return in November, this wasn’t possible. At Darsena Netter marina, I have found a very good place, well sheltered and with a helpful and very professional staff. No snobby restaurant, very focused, safe and very clean. I can recommend this place – make a reservation!

    Cantieri Nautico Albula

Following Noonsite members comments, we visited Max and Enricco yard and found it our style 🙂
We left our boat afloat there in June 2017. Afloat because we had planned to return in September for a quick cruise to Tunisia to reset our 18 TI.
Went as planned and returned to Fiumicino . Max was away ferrying a boat back from Greece, therefore in all confidence, we left our boat afloat and a list of jobs to be done in accordance with a prior estimate.

During our absence, Max and Enricco did haul out and got the work completed to our satisfaction.
E-communication was reassuring and regular with Either Max or Enricco while we were away and the work was
    In process.

Their yard, like others in the canal, appears modest, even rustic. But both Max and Enricco are quite experienced and of very good counsel.
The new lifting bridge was back in normal operation. Schedule a bit limiting, but manageable if for longer-term parking.

Italy is known to be on the expensive side in general, moreover as we are now ashore in Greece. And Cantiere Albula offers a safe, very friendly and comparatively reasonable rates. Very good place if you like quiet, want to stay onboard while preparing out or back in. We found also a good hotel walking distance. Also felt safe walking thru at night.
We would go back there any time.
Our boat is ashore in Corfu, Greece. Will forward comments shortly, on the Greece section.

Porto Touristico di Roma, Rome – Contrary to expectations Porto Touristico di Roma was not the up-market marine entry point to Rome that we had imagined but, like the previous two marinas (Cala Calera and Riva di Traiano) a utilitarian and rather down-at-the-heels affair. The marina has an almost 1km shoreline. The shoreline is lined with shops but at least 50% of the shops are boarded up. The adjacent suburb – modern Ostia – is only about two steps up from a slum: low rise apartment blocks (almost certainly public housing and most of which are showing signs of “concrete cancer”), broken road surfaces, rubbish liberally distributed and public spaces weed ridden and unkempt. At €65/ night for a 13m sailboat, it was at least reasonably priced.

Max and Enrico’s Boatyard (Cantieri Nautico Albula)

Thanks to Noonsite we found this boatyard situated about half a mile upstream from the lifting car bridge up the Fiumicino Canal. We had our catamaran lifted for the winter. The prices are very reasonable and they took extremely good care of our boat, with regular contact to make sure that our batteries were kept charged. The yard gets very busy so you need to book your space for winter early! We would have no hesitation in recommending this boatyard in the future. One last thing, they both speak good English !!
