Explore: Porto Degli Argonauti
General Info
Porto Degli Argonauti is approximately 20nm south-west of Taranto on the west side of the Gulf of Taranto. It is a purpose built a marina in a tranquil pine forest setting, surrounded by villas and a hotel.
There is no town here, just one restaurant, one pizza bar and a small supermarket with basic stock. These shoreside facilities are open from May until the end of September.
A breakwater with red and green lights extends about 300 meters into the sea. The entrance channel is dredged to approx. 3 meters which continue into the harbour. The entrance channel is narrow and would likely be untenable after a prolonged SE storm. If conditions are such, it would be wise to contact the marina in advance for a report on current conditions, or use an alternative nearby port such as Taranto.
Position: 40°19.923’ N, 16°49.0824’ E (start of the entrance channel).
Clearance
This is not a Port of Entry.
Docking
Call on VHF channel 74 when entering the breakwater.
Pontoons have lazy lines, power and water, marina staff will assist. The lazy lines, because of their limited use, can be mud-soaked, be sure to wear gloves and old clothes.
This marina is completely enclosed by land except for the entrance channel and thus well protected from all wind strength and directions.
There are haul-out facilities with a 75-ton travel lift, and it appears that most repairs can be handled, although getting hold of parts might be difficult.
This is an ideal facility for sheltering from bad weather but also for exploring the beautiful villages and towns of Puglia, Calabria and Basilicata, including famous Matera, a UNESCO protected heritage site, or for simply parking the boat for home visits. The helpful marina staff will assist with car rentals, the only way to get around as there is no form of public transportation. The nearest train/bus stop is 5 km away.
