Siracusa - Docking

Mar 18, 2024

Good all round shelter, although more exposed to the SE.

All yachts arriving in Siracusa harbor must call the Harbor Master on VHF Ch. 16 to request berthing (either at anchor or on the town quay).

Siracusa - Anchoring:

This is a good place to anchor with easy access to shore facilities with plenty of room. Because of the strong breezes in the summer, this harbor remains cool. Taking the dinghy ashore is easy with dinghy landing in the corner of the new marina on the Ortygia side of the harbor and the town has most things available. Larger supermarkets can be reached by bike.

Siracusa - Docking:

The harbour was refurbished in 2018 and the town quay offers free public mooring for the first 5 days - if you can find a space. You must get permission to moor on the public dock first from the Harbor Master (VHF Ch. 16), who will tell you which slot (berth numbers painted near the waterline). Berthing is stern, or bows-to, and there are large metal rings and bollards to tie to. Use your own anchor and lay out plenty of chain. The depth at the quay is approx. 3m. Ensure your boat is pulled well off the quay.

Take care, as there can be a big swell in the harbor - particularly in southerly winds when it can get very boisterous on the town quay.  It can also be very difficult to berth here in a cross-wind. Don't expect any assistance berthing, it's unlikely there will be anyone around. The town quay can be noisy until late.

Once berthed, visit the Coast Guard office 500m north of the quay, to complete paperwork. Water and electricity are available, but at a very high fee. Berths cannot be left unattended for long period (i.e. whole day), someone must be left on board.

Siracusa - Security:

A boat berthed here in May 2019 reported having deck gear stolen (see security reports).

Siracusa - Marinas:

The Yacht Club is situated right in the middle of town and is reported to be very friendly with good facilities. It does suffer some surge in NE winds.

There is also a small marina on the southern side of the peninsula, Marina Yachting, in the area by the canal which separates Ortygia from the mainland.
