Cairns - Boatyards

Jul 27, 2024

Most of the companies specializing in marine repair, whether electrical, engine, electronics, fibreglass, welding or sailmaking are concentrated in the Portsmith area about two miles upstream from the city centre. The Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron is based there, welcomes visitors and has a travelift and slipway. Larger boats can be slipped at the nearby Norship boatyard, which has a 120-tonne travelift.

Traditionally there has always been a difference in opinion amongst cruising sailors as to whether repair facilities are better in Cairns or Mackay, which is further down the coast. Whilst Mackay is certainly well organized, price increases recently appear to now favour Cairns, whose facilities have recently received excellent reports from visiting cruising sailors.
