Portland is a coastal city located in south-west Victoria, Australia, approximately 362 km west of Melbourne and near the South Australian border. Situated on Portland Bay, it is the state's oldest European settlement and functions as a major regional shipping port, located within the Shire of Glenelg.
Portland and surrounding areas have a deep indigenous history, featuring one of the world’s earliest sites of human settlement and society. The cultural landscape within the region is nationally recognized as the Budj Bim National Heritage Landscape – one of the oldest examples of permanent indigenous settlement.
The town was once a major whaling centre, but now concentrates on the fishing industry with lobsters one of the main sources of income.
A large population of koalas live in and around Portland and can frequently be seen in the city's parks and gardens.
This is a deep-water commercial port. However, there are berths available at the Portland Yacht Club which welcomes cruising sailors passing through Portland, whether for a short or extended stay.
