Townsville is a major coastal city in North Queensland, Australia, located on the shores of the Coral Sea. The city serves as a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and is situated about 1,300 km north of Brisbane and 350 km south of Cairns.
The Port of Townsville is northern Australia’s largest container and automotive port. It is also growing as a cruise ship destination and provides a vital link for the mining, agricultural, construction, energy, general cargo, retail, Defence and tourism industries.
In 2025, the shipping channel was dredged and widened from 92m to 180m at the inshore end tapering to 120m offshore. As this is a busy container and shipping port, normal cautions apply when approaching the city's marinas. See Townsville Notice to Mariners for current information.
Townsville is gateway to the iconic Great Barrier Reef, and there’s no shortage of ways to experience it. Magnetic Island (Yunbenun) is just a 20-minute ferry ride away, offering palm-fringed beaches, rugged national park trails, meeting the island’s koalas, or snorkelling the coral reefs.
