Hastings is an attractive fishing port lying on the western side of the large tidal bay in the Bass Strait, called Western Port Bay, approximately 75kms south of Melbourne.
The township is located on a crescent-shaped bay opening onto Western Port and features a modern commercial centre that extends several blocks along High Street with major supermarkets, as well as restaurants, coffee shops and speciality shops, right down to the Western Port foreshore.
The port of Hastings is a significant regional Victorian port, handling commercial cargoes such as crude oil, LPG and automotive diesel. There is a well defined shipping channel which is maintained by Ports Victoria.
The historic Hastings Jetty is a popular location to see pelicans as well as being a popular spot for fishing and boating activities. There is a marina and yacht club here and Hastings is probably the safest small boat harbour on Western Port, as it is easily accessiblemand protected from prevailing winds.
