Miami is part of a vast metropolitan area. Without any breaks, the city stretches nearly 100 miles up the coast of Florida. The cities of Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and West Palm Beach are part of this cityscape.
Similar to many cities that lie on both the mainland and barrier island, Miami and Miami Beach are two different cities separated by the Intracoastal Waterway and Biscayne Bay. There are many marinas and anchorages in both locations. See docking information below for specifics.
There are few areas in the entire world with as many maritime services as Miami or Fort Lauderdale. If it cannot be done here, it very likely cannot be done at all.
The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) begins its East Coast section approximately at Miami. The ICW is a clearly-defined system of canals and inland rivers that parallel the coast. In other words, you can motor up the entire Atlantic coast of Florida without ever going to sea outside the barrier islands. Nearly every significant marina in Florida will be located within a short distance from the ICW.
