Milford Haven - Docking

This huge natural harbour offers a large variety of mooring options from secluded anchorages to a marina in the middle of a busy town. The entrance has two well-marked channels, but beware of the strong cross-tides and avoid the Mid Channel Rocks in bad weather.

Being an oil terminal and active fishing port, the entrance and lower Haven are very busy. Keep a listening watch on VHF channel 12. Yachts must obey instructions from the green and white pilot boats and give 100m clearance to both the terminals and tankers (whether anchored or underway).

There are many anchorages around the Haven; Warwick Bay, Mill Bay, Dale Bay, Lindsway Bay and Sandy Bay are just some of those in the Lower Haven. There are free visitors’ pontoons in Dale Bay and Gelliswick Bay in season. Beyond Milford Haven town, you enter the waters of the River Cleddau and the wild, unspoilt country of the Pembroke National Park.

Call Milford Haven Port Control on VHF channel 12 for advice on a suitable berth or anchorage.

This is still an RSPB (Royal Society Protection of Birds) Island (although they have very few seabirds left breeding there, but masses of breeding seals from August – Christmas).

And they prefer people to land before 4 pm, for a modest fee. In 2015 we found them very friendly and they let us land after 4 pm and walk on the island as long as we kept to the paths.
