Türkiye's climate is varied but typically Mediterranean with hot summers and mild winters. Lighter winds prevail along the Mediterranean coast and nights are usually calm. There is a heavy swell along the southern Turkish coast due to the long fetch across the E. Med from Tunisia and Libya. This becomes more apparent as you leave the shelter of the Aegean islands heading east. With the afternoon land breeze this can produce heavy surf along this southern coast. In summer, the Aegean is dominated by the northerly Meltemi wind, which blows from May till the end of August and at its peak can be very strong. Going to windward in a strong Meltemi can be extremely difficult. In the summer there is frequent radiation fog in the morning along Türkiye's southern coast. This tends to clear by midday. Thunderstorms are most frequent in Spring and Autumn, usually accompanied by a squall (winds up to 40+ knots) which never last more than a couple of hours.
The Black Sea has more extremes and is more humid with the most rain. This area is usually busy with fishing boats and very small “breakwater” types of refuge from storms. Cruising yachts are advised not to be at sea after dark during the commercial fishing season due to the number of large trawlers out at night along this area of the coast.
Being so large the climate varies greatly from one region to another. Spring is the best season to visit Türkiye as the weather is moderate throughout the country and the days are long. Summer season is quite hot and generally without any rain. Evenings though are cool in inland areas. During the winter on the south west coast it can be very agreeable, although much of the country is cold, rainy with snow on high ground.
Tidal heights everywhere are less than 0.5m at springs - a tidal difference that is often cancelled out by strong contrary winds.
