Amelia Island - Docking

Oct 01, 2016

Take care when navigating in the areas around Amelia Island. Tide streams can run 3-5 knots at celestial tide under bridges and in narrow bends. Currents in the area around Amelia Island, as well as in the seaward inlets, are known to be hazardous.

Anchorages are plentiful, but like elsewhere along the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), keep out of the main channel and always use proper anchor lights.

This area was affected by Hurricane Matthew in October 2016 and many of the charted depths, shoals, and channel markers may have been altered. Seek local knowledge for the recent conditions.

Amelia Island is bounded by two inlets: St.Mary's Inlet (north) and Nassau Sound (south). Only St. Mary's Inlet is passable: Nassau Sound is obstructed by shifting shoals and breakers, often with depths of only 2-3ft. If approaching from the south, consider entering the ICW at Jacksonville (St. John's River Inlet), which is a major shipping channel and has adequate depths for any private vessels.
