Amelia Island - Clearance Agents

Oct 01, 2016

Description:

Amelia Island is the final stop in Florida before crossing the Georgia border if heading north, and many cruiser's first stop in Florida if heading south. The island has a number of small towns on it, but the largest – Fernandina Beach – is home to a rich history of French, Spanish, British, and American influences. It celebrates its storied past boasting that Amelia Island is the "Isle of Eight Flags" making it the only municipality in the United States that has flown eight different national flags.

The area is heavily tidal and the fast-running currents can catch cruisers unaware. European visitors might feel right at home navigating where some yacht harbours are inaccessible at low tide and passage-making is dependent on the state of tide due to current and depth restrictions.
