Rota lies about 8nm north of Cadiz, adjacent to the huge US Naval Base.
The origins of the town date back to Phoenician and Cartesian times. It is a historical city, including a 13th-century ducal residence that now houses the Town Hall, the Regla Archway in the ancient walls and ancient churches.
