La Coruna - Activities, Attractions & Shopping

Aug 02, 2017

Climb to the top of the 57m-high Torre de Hercules lighthouse, a World Heritage site. The first thing to be seen is the excavation within the base. After 230 stopes to the top, your reward is a 360-degree view of the city and ocean.

Take a day trip to Santiago de Compostela. The City's cathedral is its main attraction and the final destination of the 9th-century pilgrimages, the Way of St James. (One-hour bus ride from La Coruna's bus station).

La Coruna has the oldest working lighthouse in the world (Torre de Hercules) - built by the Romans and refaced in the 18th century. Still in use today! It is definitely worth the walk up to see it, but choose a cool day; it is a stiff climb! Alternatively, take the tram (every half hour) from in front of the Darsena.

The old town has attractive narrow cobbled streets, and a long naval history. The houses are built traditionally in granite, all with galleried balconies typical of Galicia.

South of the Torre as Paseo Maritimo, reached by tram, Aquarium Finisterre is a must for any visitor. Centred on the Atlantic marina species, the aquarium is very carefully put together.
