For tips about boatyard practices in SE Asia and how to avoid pitfalls see: Getting work done on your boat whilst long distance cruising.
This is a very friendly town. All the basics are available in town including automotive electricians, diesel fitters, and welders, but parts are hard to get and anything “out of the ordinary” must be sourced from Kota Kinabalu, about three hours by mini-bus or car.
The Penuwasa shipyard (details below) and travel-lift were designed for the local fishing fleet, however, they do occasionally deal with pleasure yachts. Fishing vessels come from far and wide with a variety of crews. The yard has created a new concrete slab area, near the office and travel-lift, with adjacent en-suite bathrooms for each yacht and which is an excellent facility. The separate earthen hard-standing area turns into slush when it rains, which is often, and is of a poor standard and with rubbish strewn throughout the area. There are also en-suite bathrooms here but these are old, inevitably need a good clean out, and have poor water pressure. Rates are much higher in the new concrete slab area but worth it. The operators are good and day labor is cheap.
Thefts from boats on the hard have been reported here.
