Naha / Ginowan (Okinawa Island) - Clearance

Jun 30, 2019

See Japan Formalities for detailed clearance information.

General Clearance:

Naha port must be visited first to clear into Okinawa.

It is important to e-mail the Coast Guard 24 hours before arrival (as outlined in formalities above). They use an online translator and reply promptly. The email should also request they arrange a landing location with the Naha port authority (see details below).

The Coast Guard will give you the exact GPS location as to where you must wait for officials to board for clearance.

All government officials will want to come on board, so be prepared to fill in a serious amount of paperwork. Officials here are reported to be very friendly.

If you have not already obtained your closed port permit online, you have to visit the OGB at the Ministry of Land Office in Naha city (see details below) to get one. It takes 10 - 15 minutes by taxi to get there from the Port. Permission will take at least half a day, so you may have to visit the office twice.
