Ogasawara Islands (Bonin Islands) - General Info
Konpira Consulting provides cruisers - from single-handers on small sailboats to fully-crewed superyachts - with comprehensive support to enjoy the wonders of Japan's oceans. That includes handling all clear-in/out paperwork, preparing passage plans, recommending moorage options, making marina reservations, arranging repairs and haul-outs, and providing emergency support.
In 2025, we will be organizing two rallies.
- The Japan Yacht Rally, from mid-March to late May, to support cruisers going from Okinawa to Hokkaido on their way to Alaska and beyond.
- The Setouchi Yacht Rally, in May, to help foreign and Japanese cruisers explore the beautiful Seto Inland Sea.
Konpira Consulting is also the exclusive Japan agent for Hydrovane wind vanes. In addition, we act as a yacht broker, support boat owners (e.g., surveys, insurance, offshore preparations, equipment/parts searches), and advise marinas.

Description:
This archipelago of over 30 subtropical and tropical islands lie in the Pacific Ocean some 540 miles south of Honshu.
Because the Ogasawara Islands have never been connected to a continent, many of their animals and plants have undergone unique evolutionary processes. For this reason, the islands are often referred to as the ‘Galapagos of the Orient’ and in 2011 gained a World Heritage Natural Site listing.
The islands have an interesting history of being claimed by various countries, with the first permanent settlement established by ex-whalers from the USA in the 1830s. The islands changed sovereignty a couple of times through various colonial period machinations and Pacific activities of the second world war, with them being returned to Japan in 1968.
Chichijima is the main island in the group.
If you are voyaging to Japan from the East, this is a natural Port of Entry to Japan – however – it is not possible to get Naikosenpaku here – see Clearance for more details. It is also the administrative center of the island group, with most major government agencies located here.
Position:
27° 05.72’N, 142° 11.93’E (Chichijima harbour entrance)

YachtFlags.com provides high quality courtesy flags that are manufactured in durable Knitted Polyester fabric. Knitted so that the fabric itself does not deteriorate in the constant movement that marine flags are usually exposed to, and polyester so that the flag does not weaken in the strong UV-light usually found in the main sailing areas of the world.

the Futami Ko dock is getting an extension, construction is underway. When we docked here on February 16th 2019 there was already about 50 feet. Once it is completed it will help to shield the dock from W-SW swells. Note that this extension is not yet charted, so if entering at night be careful (the end has two blinking yellow lights).
Water is available at the Futami dock, though access is restricted (the faucet is locked) and so you must ask for the key (An Ogasawara yacht club member who works at Flora helped us). There is a flat fee of 1000Yen for filling up, that is, unless you require a LOT of water.
For trash, you can find out which days to bring them out, or you can carry them to B.I.T.C store to bins next to the vending machines. They have bins for pet bottles, cans and burnable trash.
Internet is available at Heartrock cafe, otherwise you can register for a free FREESPOT account at the visitor’s center (seems unlimited with an account, for 180 days), or you can visit the internet center at the north-west end of town, south of the weather station (300yen per hour, no wifi, power available).
