Docking
Visiting yachts can moor Med-style along the inside of the eastern breakwater. Depths and holding are good and there is sufficient protection here from the prevailing wind. Watch out for strong gusts that blow down from the surrounding mountains at night. Water and power is available from a few outlets.
Do take care using your own anchor here as the bottom is fouled with all kinds of debris (chains, old anchors, old mooring ropes etc.).
Cruise ship tenders (when in port) may block off four to five available slots. The Port Authority do notify cruisers when they are required to move to make space for cruise ship tenders, normally the evening before.
Fishing boats tie-up further into the harbour and on the western quay, which is not permitted for yachts. About a third of the available space in this port is taken up by derelict boats caught in illegal activities and confiscated by the Greek authorities.
Port fees are charged at about 0.40 Euro per meter, this includes power and water. The port fees are payable at the Town Hall (first-floor staff speak English), a receipt must be shown to the port authorities prior to departure.
Anchoring
Anchoring is possible on either side of Nisos Kranai and provides protection from northerlies and southerlies, but it can be choppy. The bottom is sand and weed, so try to pick a sandy patch for good holding.
Another useful anchorage is Porto Kayio about 21NM south of Yithion at the tip on the east side of the Mani peninsula. This bay offers good shelter on the way to Methoni or Kalamata but does suffer from katabatic winds blasting down the mountains. Take care!

We liked this way above our expectations. Don’t go near the restaurants along the seafront – over-priced and under-quality. We ate very very well at O-live, although being on the main road is a bit of a drawback. Yes the harbour is a bit rolly if the wind is from the NE – all too likely.
Feedback July 2018. Extensive inspection by coast guards, but they were very nice. All papers, passports, permits, Dekpa inspected.
Moored/anchored med style in the harbour but the coast guards told us that anchoring outside, in the bay near Kraina island, was authorised (our old Imray guide said it was not always allowed).
Regarding the comment below, note that Porto Kayio is not that safe including with NW winds that fall down the mountains (let alone by NE), beware. It is a nice spot, though and a good shelter on the way to Methoni or Kalamata.

Gythion
Although they are working to extend the big easterly breakwater, there is still some place for yachts. We used our anchor to moor but the bottom is fouled with all kinds of chain, old anchors, old mooring ropes etc.
We found that out when leaving the harbor. The Port Police are really looking at who is arriving and departing. They checked our new DEKPA. We had to pay the standard Greek price 8,16 € for a 14-meter yacht.
Payment has to be done in the town hall on the first floor. There they speak English. On the ground floor – where we started to ask – they only speak Greek.
So with lots of arm, hands and legs waving and pictures of our boat, we were directed to the first floor!! This is a good place to visit Sparta and the ancient city of Mystra, well worth a visit.
