Evripos Canal (Khalkis/Chalcis) - Clearance Agents

Mar 01, 2024

Description:

The town of Khalkis is the capital of Evia and its waterfront is an attractive area. Evia is a beautiful island and well worth a visit by car if you are stuck waiting and seek some alternative to sailing.

Between Euboea (Evia) Island and mainland Greece, the Khalkis bridge only opens at slack tide or when ships can pass with a following tide, as there is a very strong current at other times.

See OLNE S.A. / Evia Island Port Authority for the latest information on bridge opening/works/closure etc.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

  • The bridge only opens overnight - from 22:00 to 04:00 - every day except the first Friday night of the month.
  • Waiting docks are clearly marked in red.
  • Go to the Port Authority office on the side of the bridge that you are entering, between 16:00 and 20:00, to pay the fee and get your scheduled time. If necessary, contact the Port Authority (Tel: +30 22210 28888) for information.
  • See Clearance for more information.
  • The current here is very strong. Be sure to have lots of fenders.
  • Cruisers report March 2024 that since 2022 there have been several break-ins at the waiting docks. Be sure to lock your boat at all times when not on board and at night, and don't leave any valuables on deck or in view down below. See the comments icon under "Explore port" for more details.

Position:

38°24.03'N, 23°38.18'E (southern approach to Chalcis).
