Port Khios (Chios) - General Info

Jun 26, 2025

ALERT:

This Greek island has been battling several wildfires that broke out at the same time on Sunday 22 June, 2025. A state of emergency has been declared and dozens of villages have been evacuated. It is recommended to avoid this island until the situation is under control. More info. here.

Where is Chios?

Chios is in the northern Aegean Sea, in close proximity to Turkey meaning that Limin Khiou (Port Chios) is a useful clearance port.

It is, however, a large ferry port and busy town, so likely not a place you will want to linger.

The island is relatively high and barren and rocky, with only the NW coast having pine forests.

The largest village in the NW part of the island, Volissos, is claimed to be one of the possible birthplaces of the famous poet Homer. The old town inside the Byzantine castle walls is a maze of narrow streets and churches with a restored hammam.

Entrance Notes and Cautions

Limin Khiou (Port Khios) often has an uncomfortable, lumpy swell in the approaches to the harbor (and in the Khios channel) due to the prevailing northerlies blowing against a north-flowing current. When there is a sustained north wind, the southern end of the port is rolly and uncomfortable, with white caps within the harbour a possibility. Ferry wash can make conditions uncomfortable in this harbor. There is also a lot of rubbish in the water here and sewers emptying directly into the harbour.

Khios Marina closed for construction/re-development at the start of 2025.

Position:

38°22.16'N, 26°08.69'E (harbor entrance)
