Ikaria - Docking

Evdhilos

This is the only port on the north coast of Ikaria, with its sheer cliffs dropping straight into the sea. Evdhilos is a pretty little village and the harbour is now more protected with a recent breakwater extension.

Yachts can anchor behind the breakwater or try and find space in the small basin behind the ferry quay. Failing that it's possible to go bows-to (recommended as there is a lot of underwater rubble) on the inside of the breakwater and neighbouring quay. Note that the quay is quite high with limited tying off points.

In strong NE winds this harbor is untenable.

Water and electricity are available in parts of the harbor and the village has good provisions.

Loutro

On the southeast coast, this bay is approx. 0.5NM NE of the capital Ay Kirikos. It's possible to anchor here with a long line to the breakwater and is a good place to find adequate shelter from the Meltemi. There are hot springs here and thermal baths with a small quay suitable for small yachts.

Ay Kirikos

While this is the capital of the island and main ferry port, it's actually very small with limited space to maneuver for visiting yachts. In northerly winds this harbor suffers from strong gusts in the approaches off the high land that surrounds the harbor and it's windy here a lot!

Once you have rounded the outer breakwater you will see the inner breakwater protecting the small town basin (old port). Yachts can berth on the southern pier, although watch out for permanent moorings when laying your anchor and shallow depths close to the root of the pier. Holding is patchy.

There are water and electricity on the pier and a mini-tanker can deliver fuel. Good sized town for provisioning and supplies. Ferry to Piraeus.

New Marina: Cruisers report that to the NE of the old port a small, new marina is near to completion. While is it not officially open, yachts can berth here alongside free of charge and there are water and electricity available. The entrance is close to shore and open to the NE, marked with a red and green light. There is space for approximately 12 yachts, however latest reports are that the marina is filling up and you will likely have to raft alongside another boat.

There is a hot thermal water bath inside the new marina.

Manganitis

Approximately 10NM SW of the capital is this small fishing/ferry harbor. Best visited in calm weather only this port suffers from considerable swell, strong gusts of wind and shallow water. If the wind is from the south this harbor is untenable. Moor alongside, inside the breakwater. Yacht moorings may be available in the future. Well worth a visit if you have the right conditions.
