Simi - Docking

Jun 09, 2023

Town Quay:

There is a definite system in this harbor for berthing, whereby harbor authority personnel allocate spaces to all visiting vessels. In general, large motor boats and Turkish gulets are placed towards the harbor entrance; sailing boats and smaller motor boats are placed at the other end. The "boatmen" will use a whistle to direct you to a space on the quay and help with your lines.

Docking on the town quay in Simi can be achieved with Med mooring using your own anchor, or using one of the ready-laid moorings. If you accept assistance to tie to a mooring - you will be charged for this (cruisers report 25 euros in 2021). The nightly charge for mooring on the town quay is 13 euros.

The South quay is now also used to moor yachts but beware of anchors fouling each other.

It is also possible to moor north of the clock tower, taking a long line ashore to avoid the shallows close to the quay. The bottom is rocky in places so the holding can be suspect.

Anchoring Tips:

  • This is an entirely natural harbor and the centre is deep, so be prepared when dropping anchor as the depth can be 12 to 20 meters (39 - 65 ft).
  • As you enter the inner part of the harbor, the last slot on the starboard side just before the fishing boats, there is a chain running parallel to the harbor wall about 40 meters (131 ft) off. Do not moor here.

Visit the Port Police once docked to pay port fees.

Marina:

The new Marina Symi, in Pedi, is now open, with 58 berths and Med-moor space for yachts up to 30m/8m draft. It has standard facilities available (see Related Businesses below for details).

Anchorages Around the Island:

Due to its very indented coastline, there are many sheltered bays around the island.

Pethi: One of the most useful anchorages, being adjacent to Simi harbor. Anchor off the pier, or in front of the hotel (5-25m in sand) or tie up in the marina. Beware of the reinforcing rods sticking out from the marina wall. There is a bus to the town from here.

Ay Marina: Lies to the north of Simi harbor and provides a calm, sheltered anchorage in clear water over a sandy bottom.

Panormittis: This enclosed bay is on the SW corner of the island. There maybe room on the pier or anchor in the northern part of the bay. Good holding once through the weed. Some provisions available. Bus to Simi.
