Simi - Facts

Jun 09, 2023

Description:

Tucked in close to the Turkish mainland, Simi is an irregular shaped island with many useful anchorages. It was once famous for its shipbuilding, having built the fast galleys used in the 12th and 13th centuries, as well as for sponge diving.

The small inlet harbour of Simi port is a very pretty natural harbour, with colourful village houses on the hillside and evidence of its Italian heritage in the architecture.

This is a useful place to check out of Greece (and the EU) if heading to Turkey.

Yachts can anchor, moor on the town quay or use the new marina here.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

  • As you enter the inner part of the harbor, the last slot on the starboard side just before the fishing boats, there is a chain running parallel to the harbor wall about 40 meters (131 ft) off. Do not moor here.
  • There is good shelter from the "Meltemi", but prolonged southerlies build up an unpleasant swell.
  • The constant stream of Gulets in and out and the large ferries cause some wash, although this appears better than previously. The harbor is generally overcrowded.

Position:

36° 37.19'N, 27° 50.49'E (approach to Simi port)
