Patmos - General Info

May 22, 2024

Description:

This rather barren island, consisting of three volcanic hills, is the most northerly island of all the Dodecanese.

The natural harbor of Skala Patmos lies on the eastern side of the island, on the eastern side of the central isthmus. It is overseen to the north by the Chora of Patmos (the old town) which is topped with the monastery of St. John the Divine.

Easter is a wonderful time to visit Patmos as next to Mt. Athos, Patmos is a major spiritual centre for the Greek Orthodox Church with students from all over Greece attending the theological college here.

Cruiser Highlights:

There is a boatyard here that offers most repairs and daily ferries to Piraeus and Rhodes, Kos and Samos. Big town good for provisions, hardware, chandlery, laundry etc. Lots of history.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

When the Meltemi blows, approach the bay with care as strong gusts blow down into the bay from the surrounding high land. The harbor does offer adequate shelter.

Take care as there are reefs on the approaches to the harbor of Skala.

Position:

37° 19.36'N, 26° 33.03'E (harbor entrance)
