Tahiti is easily accessible by air from most parts of the world including the United States, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, France, Chile and Hawaii. Air Tahiti Nui is the primary international carrier. There are over 40 airports in French Polynesia, however, by way the largest is the international airport on Tahiti (Fa’a’ā International Airport).
The domestic airline is Air Tahiti which is the primary mode of transportation between the islands with regular flight service from Papeete.
French low cost airline, Frenchbee fly between France and French Polynesia, via the USA.
Most of French Polynesia does not have a particularly efficient public transport network. However, Tahiti benefits from approx. 20 bus lines that criss-cross the area (more in urban areas than remote). In Papeete getting around by bus is easy until 6pm, when all services cease, and less so on Saturdays (and no service Sundays).
While taxis are useful for evening sojourns and airport transfers etc., if planning on doing extensive exploring inland it is much cheaper to rent a car. Agree the fare prior to boarding a taxi.
Rental cars and motorcycles are available in Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine, Bora Bora, Raiatea and Taha'a. Cars drive on the right and a national driving license from your home country is all that's required to rent a car. All car hire companies charge the same daily rate with unlimited km.
The island of Moorea can be reached by daily ferry service from Tahiti, which takes approximately 30 minutes one way. Slower, cargo-type ships travel to Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora.
