Nuku Hiva - Water

Apr 04, 2025

The water at the public dock and at the municipal taps is not suitable for drinking. In Taiohae there are three clean water faucets in town with potable water, all free:

  1. In the parking lot adjacent to the school up the road from the bank.
  2. On the road to the hardware store.
  3. On the waterfront road just past the Catholic church.

There are public showers (sometimes hot) at the wharf (approx. 1 Euro).

Cruisers have recommended Daniels Bay (Baie de Taioa) - five miles west - as the best place for potable water, from the tap at the village (just ask the locals).

Closer by, in Baie de Controleur, you can get drinking water at the shed at Taipevai, (or just beyond the shed at Hooumi).

Water is a precious resource in the islands.
