Nuku Hiva - Clearance

Apr 04, 2025

This is a Port of Entry.

A single, online form is now in use for all foreign pleasure yachts.  See the French Polynesia Clearance page for full details.

It is no longer compulsory for all yachts visiting French Polynesia to visit Papeete Customs and Immigration to complete the clearing-in process or to email the customs with your documentation.

General Clearance Requirements for Nuku Hiva:

There are three Gendarmerie areas in the Marquesas: Hiva Oa, Ua Pou, and Nuku Hiva.   Taiohae is the Port of Entry for Nuku Hiva.

All yachts must have completed the Declaration of Entry and Exit of Pleasure Craft before arrival.

The Gendarmerie Nationale in Taiohae can deal with Customs and Immigration.  Currently they are only clearing yachts in between 7.30am and 10.30am.  Their office is opposite the Post Office, up the hill on the right. It is not far from the dock. Both skipper and crew must attend.

If required, the bond can be purchased at the Bank Socredo, a short walk along the waterfront road. Bank Socredo also has a branch in Bora Bora where the bond will be refunded upon departure.

If you are having problems with the Online system, you can use the services of local agent Kevin Ellis from Yacht Services Nuku Hiva.

If you arrive without permission from DPAM you may be fined.

Customs patrol the islands and in particular Nuku Hiva, boarding as many yachts as possible. They have a list of yachts checked in and have scanned copies of their customs declaration. Officials are reported to be polite but checks could be anything from a quick look around to a very thorough opening of everything (even tapping for hidden compartments). It is important to declare properly what you have on board or you will be fined or have items confiscated. They are looking for arms, alcohol, strong medicine and pearls. Pearls without receipts are confiscated as they are trying to remove poor quality pearls from the market.

Fees and charges

On arrival, and after clearance formalities, proceed to the Mairie (City Hall) to pay mandatory taxes:

  • 1500 XPF/week for rubbish disposal (which must be sorted)
  • 50 XPF/day/person for tourist tax.

Rubbish Disposal

You can drop your sorted trash in the containers at the entrance to the dock or separate and put glass, cans, tins, plastic, batteries and used oil in recycle bins a little further away (note that because oils and dangerous materials like batteries will be shipped by boat to Tahiti, you might as well keep them onboard until you reach Tahiti if heading that way).

Please fill out the municipal form and pay the waste disposal fee of 1,500 XF/week at the Mairie (City Hall) located on the left when you come out of the dock. Your receipt gives you a 10% discount coupon at Nuku Tai Nui Marine.
