Fresh market & small supermarkets: Closed on Holidays and afternoons during the weekend. Get your fresh French baguettes in the morning or before the weekend – as they run out quickly!
There are four supermarkets and a bakery in Taiohae Bay. You can reserve eggs and bread to be collected the next day at Larsons Supermarket.
Fresh fruits and vegetable stand, daily 6am-3pm except Sundays. (4 a.m. Saturday if you want tomatoes!!!)
The Saturday market starts at 5 am and lasts until around 10 am depending on supplies, however, you will easily find good fresh produce at 8 am.
There are three shops at Taipevai (Baie du Controlleur). Walk up the road until you find a right-hand turn, down across the river. Two shops to the left, and a newer one to the right, which is better stocked and the owner speaks some English. She will order bread for you and also do your laundry.
Store items priced in red are govt. subsidized and a set price everywhere on Nuku Hiva.
Some stores offer free truck rides to the Petit Quai if you have a heavy or large purchase, but you have to ask.
There is a Saturday morning flea market (marche de puce), 5-6:30 am, also selling fresh seafood and prepared foods.
