Freeport (Texas) - Docking

Jan 01, 2017

Similar to elsewhere on the Gulf Coast, marinas have a slant toward the sportfishing community. Nevertheless, cruisers and cruising yachts are welcome at nearly all marinas and facilities are held to a relatively high standard everywhere.

Freeport is located directly on the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW).

There are few tenable anchorages in the port area or in downtown Freeport. There are a number of anchorages outside of the town nearer to the Wildlife Refuge and to the west at the intersection of tributaries and creeks. Remember, do not anchor in a channel and always use anchor lights at night.

There are multiple security/exclusion zones in the Freeport Port. The US Coast Guard takes the security zones seriously and will enforce the boundaries. Specifically, these zones affect cruisers staying at the Freeport Marina, which is downtown and slightly upriver beyond the port. Refer to the most recent charts and USCG Notice to Mariners for updated information.
