Considering the history of the area, many visitors to Marathon are not aware that it only became a city in 1999. The area is growing fast, though it is still much quieter than Key West.
Dockage and anchorages are plentiful and typically cheaper than Key West; however, Marathon does not have clearance services and any new arrivals to the USA should clear in at Key West.
