Key Largo - Documents

Jul 01, 2017

Description:

Key Largo is the first of the Florida Keys when traveling from the mainland on Highway 1. The Key markets itself as the "Diving Capital of the World" due to the large coral reef area a few miles offshore. The island itself is a fossilized remnant of a prehistoric coral reef.

Similar to the other Florida Keys, Key Largo is a long, narrow island with plentiful water access. The area requires careful navigation in the shallows.

The Gulf Stream is a predominant current that flows southwest to northeast in this area. At certain times of the year, the flow can reach as much as a knot or more. Keep this in mind when navigating in the area and take care when a strong wind is against the current.

If approaching from offshore, expect increased military or US Coast Guard presence. Immigration and customs authorities patrol this area thoroughly and may intercept any yachts that appear to be heading to land from open sea. Follow all instructions from authorities and expect a thorough search of your vessel.
