Newport (Rhode Island) - Docking

Anchoring:

Anchoring is permitted in the harbour, but contact the Harbour Master (VHF ch. 16) first. Boats must not be left unattended (i.e. not leave the area).

The main City Anchorage is a small area at the southern end of the main harbour, just south of the main east-west channel as you enter the harbour from Fort Adams. Be sure to contact the Harbormaster on VHF Ch:16 for directions.

 

There are two federal anchorages, one is directly north of Goat Island, and the other is directly west of Goat Island.

All areas are busy in the Summer.

Marinas and Moorings:

There are several marinas on the east side of the harbour and one on Goat Island, plus hundreds of moorings in the harbour, many for transients. Call Oldport Marine on VHF 68, Newport Mooring Service on VHF 09, Brenton Cove on VHF 09 and the Harbormaster on VHF 16.

Services Ashore:

For those at anchor or on a mooring, the City of Newport offers a free public boating facility at their dingy dock.

The Maritime Center is located under the Sailing Museum with their entrance to shore [dinghy dock coordinates: 41.4834171, -71.3157823] at 365 Thames St, Newport, RI 02840.
Laundry for wash and dry, costs US$5 per washing load (about 29 minutes hot and warm cycle as available) and $4 for a 40 minute drying cycle.
In addition restrooms and showers ($1,75 for 7 minutes).  The machines only take quarters and can change $1 and $5 bills.
Hours from 07:30 to 20:00 - signing in their guestbook is appreciated.

North of Newport (approx. 20NM), there are several full-service marinas at Greenwich Bay, Apponaug.

Portsmouth and Bristol also provide marinas.
