Hokkaido - Docking

Aug 22, 2023

Kushiro (east coast):

Docking

After entering the river there is a large building on the port side with MOO in large blue lettering. Tie up alongside the wharf in front of it, which is the dedicated wharf for visiting yachts (see photo below, courtesy of Jim Patek). There are no marine facilities here.

Ashore

Kushiro is a good location from which to depart Japan with an excellent supermarket a short distance from the MOO Building. The management of the MOO Building are helpful to cruisers and speak good English. There are several friendly locals who will help with fuel delivery using jerry cans. There is a large DIY store, however, this is not within walking distance.

Wifi and toilets are available in the MOO building.

Otaru (west coast):

Docking

Otaru has a good full-facility marina - Port Otaru Marina -  with a crane for yachts up to 20 tons and a ramp for larger vessels, plus associated marine services. This is a good place to leave your boat at season-end or to get boat work done and re-provision. The marina manager is reported to be very helpful and can assist with appointing a yacht caretaker. See Related Businesses for more marina details.

Departing Japan from Otaru, there is an international passage through the islands that belong to Russia.
