Egina (Aigina) - Facts

May 05, 2022

Description:

This triangular shaped island lies in the NW of the Aegean guarding its approaches in a strategic position for both trade and defense over the centuries. It is a very rocky island with the summit of Mt. Oros rising in the south.

Lying on the western shore of the island, the main port of Egina is about 25NM (20 minutes by hydrofoil) from Athens and is a very popular destination for people from the city. The tavernas on the waterfront are an attractive spot from which to watch the world go by!

On the north coast, there are four boatyards. With the easy access to Athens and good rates, many cruisers choose to winter their boats here.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

Take care on approaching the harbour entrance as it is very busy with ferries and hydrofoils entering and leaving at high speed.

Position:

37° 44.62' N, 023° 25.53' E (harbour entrance)
