Puerto Sauce - Docking

There is a long breakwater protecting the harbor from the south and a smaller one protecting the moorings on the northern side.

The DNH (National Hydrographic Directorate) manage an 80 berth marina and some mooring buoys. Prices are reported to be very reasonable (see comments at bottom of page). Water and electricity at additional cost (charged per 24 hours).

The Yacht Club has basic facilities for visiting crew. A travel lift has been installed, further improving facilities here and there is now  drydock space for 30 boats.

Fuel can be obtained from a petrol station half a km away from the marina and there is a supermarket and plenty of shops in town.

I stayed in Puerto Sauce for a month in May 2017 and it is the cheapest harbor in Uruguay, a third of Piriapolis or Montevideo. Water and electricity costs extra per day (24h). The staff is very friendly and helpful. But the town is dead. All of the factories are closed, so there is no smell and noise.

A petrol station is 500m away and the bus terminal to Colonia and Montevideo is 250m away. There is one big supermarket and a lot of small shops in the town.

We stayed here for a month in May and June. It is a really nice small town, good for cycling and walking. The harbor is generally well protected, the worst angle of wind is SW. It appears to be one of the cheaper harbors in Uruguay, and the best protected we have been to so far.

The only downside is its close proximity to a pulp and paper mill, which when the wind is in the wrong quarter is noisy, dirty and smelly. But we stayed for a month! and did a lot of brightwork maintenance despite the factory. We would recommend it.

Friendly staff in the hidrografia office too. We draw 2 meters and at times had not much water under us med moored to the dock, but we were fine.
