Anchoring Restrictions

Most of the islands on the east coast of Malaysia are marine parks, with no anchoring permitted within 3 miles of the islands unless you have a permit. Even then, officials have been known to fine yachts at anchor. Take particular care when cruising south of Tioman Island.  There are heavy penalties for damaging coral.

See this news item for incidents of yachts fined in 2024 and 2023.

Anchorages:

The Marine Park Authority has laid orange buoys all around the island but they are often inadequate.

Anchoring is possible off the reef along the entire length of the bay in 12metres on a rocky bottom It is also possible to anchor on the north side of the marina on 5-15 metres on sand.  There is space here for about 20 yachts.

Juara Beach is a fair-weather anchorage on the eastern side of the island with excellent protection in the southwest monsoon.  It becomes a surf beach in the NE monsoon.    Anchor in 10metres on a sandy bottom off the northern beach jetty at the Juara Bay Resort. All sand, no reef. Juara has a collection of small beach-front restaurants, with generally lower prices than in Tektek. Laundry services are also available for less than Tektek. There's minimal provisioning available here.

Mukut Village is a small friendly kampong fishing village on the southern coast of Tioman.  Anchor in 8-15metres on sand in front of the village.  The scenery is impressive with the distinctive twin peaks of Gunung Semukut ('Donkey's Ears' or 'Dragon's Horns) towering above.

Tioman Marina:

The marina at the village of Teluk Tekek on the western side of the island is open, but it has very limited space for visitors as much of the marina is taken up with small local tourist boats. Arriving around midday is the best time as many local boats have left,  It is run by the Harbour Department, which is located at the ferry terminal where CIQ clearance takes place. Most of the villages have jetties.
