Located just west of Rangiroa, Tikehau is one of the most beautiful atolls in Polynesia. The lagoon is home to an extraordinary array of marine life and it is also home to large colonies of seabirds, who find refuge on some of the small motu (islets), one of which is aptly named “Bird Island”, for the Red-footed Boobies and Brown Noddies that nest there.
This beautiful little atoll is protected by a single pass on the west side with range markers and a marked channel to the main village and from the main village to the Pearl Beach Resort.
The pass is 150 meters wide and 4 to 8 meters deep. Avoid entering during a Northwest wind. Stay to the center of the pass.
The atoll of Tikehau is one of the major dive destinations in the Tuamotus. With just a single pass into the ocean, the lagoon harbors an astonishing underwater fauna. The distinctive aspect of diving in Tikehau is, without doubt, the conserved nature and richness of the dive-spots, as little as 15 minutes’ boat ride from the main village.
The quaint and flowery village of Tuherahera maintains its authenticity, giving Tikehau its unmistakable charm. An ideal destination for those seeking to discover and share the paumotu philosophy of life.
