Hao - Restrictions

Jul 09, 2025

Where is Hao?

This island formally housed a French Naval Base which supported the nuclear testing site at nearby Mururoa Atoll. It is home for about 1200 people. Rarely visited by yachts as it lies to the south of most cruising routes.

Hao Entrance Notes and Cautions:

  • The Kaki pass (Hao) has a reputation for being especially nasty, with Sailing Directions warning that the current can, in certain conditions, be close to 12 knots.
  • The pass is well marked with navigation marks that are maintained.
  • If anchoring directly off the town, you will encounter many coral heads. Anchoring in the old Navy basin is a safer choice.

Cruiser Highlights for Hao:

The old Navy Marina is a concrete walled basin which can accommodate up to nine boats tied up, with more at anchor.  Calm waters in all except a northwest wind.  Ideal for doing mast checks.  Otepa is the main settlement. Some provisions available at two small grocery stores.

Position:

18°03'90S, 141°0 0'31W (the pass)

18°06'S,140°54'W (Anchorage off Otepa)
