Description:
The quiet, seaside city of Melaka (Malacca) lies about 150km south of Kuala Lumpur.
In its heyday, 500 years ago, it was a major port along the spice-route, and its harbor was thick with the sails and masts of vessels from all over the world. Because the city was originally built of wood, there are no ancient reminders of those times, but along the shores of the Malacca River the scene has probably changed little and there are still many reminders of the colonial period of its history.
Entrance Notes and Cautions:
Entering the river is tidal dependent as there is a bar across the outer river entrance with 2.7m at high tide and 1.2m at low water inside the marina.
Take care approaching the river as there are extensive reclamation projects operating both sides of the entrance.
On the north bank of the river is "The Eye on Malaysia" (a large Ferris wheel) which is a good landmark when making for Malacca.
Position:
02°11.03'N, 102°14.27'E (river entrance)
