Water:

The quality of the water is variable so it is advisable to check if the tap water is safe to drink. When travelling in rural areas it is recommended that bottled water is used.Town water supply is heavily chlorinated and calcified, village supply is not treated, but can be tainted by sea water if it is overused.

Tanks can be filled at Neiafu (Vava’u) and Nuku’alofa (Tongatapu). Rainwater is available from Cafe Tropicana in Vava'u in 20 litre jugs.

Some rainwater from the cistern on Niuatoputapu Island.

Getting Work Done:

Vava'u has a yachtshop, boatyard and various providers that hold partsIt is possible to store your boat here but there is no mechanic, electrician, rigger or sailmaker.  Spare parts are hard to come by.  Most parts will have to be imported from other places i.e. New Zealand, Australia or the US and importing parts into Tonga can be problematical - long wait times, expensive and often opened prior to receipt.

Provisions:

There are several supermarkets which stock local staples and produce and fresh produce markets. Be sure to arrive early.  Imported foods are expensive.
