Airports:

Tonga has six airports, two of which are international airports, which also serve domestic flights. The rest are only domestic airports.

Tonga International Airports:

Fua’amotu International Airport (Tongatapu) - is the main airport for international arrivals in Tonga. The airport is located 21km (13 miles) from Nuku’alofa, a 30-minute drive away.

Lupepau’u International Airport (Vava’u) - also known as Vava’u International Airport, receives international arrivals from Fiji and Samoa, as well as domestic flights from Tongatapu, Niuatoputapu, Niuafo’ou and Ha’apai.

Tonga Domestic Airports:

Salote Pilolevu Airport (Lifuka Island, Ha’apai) - has regular flights to and from Tongatapu with Lulutai Airlines, as well as weekly flights to and from Vava’u.

Kaufana Airport (‘Eua) - has regular flights operating between Kaufana Airport on ‘Eua Island and Tongatapu with Lulutai Airlines. The flight between the two airports is said to be the shortest scheduled flight in the world at approximately 7 minutes.

Mata’aho Airport (Niuatoputapu) - operates flights twice a month between Niuatoputapu and Vava’u through Lulutai Airlines.

Kuini Lavinia Airport (Niuafo’ou) - has flights to and from Vava’u once a month.

Approximate flight times:

  • Eua - Flight time: 20 minutes from Tongatapu
  • Ha’apai - Flight time: 30 minutes from Tongatapu or Vava’u
  • Vava’u - Flight time: 55mins from Tongatapu or 30 mins from Ha’apai

Car Rentals:

There is a wide range of vehicle types available to rent on the islands of Tongatapu and Vava’u with plenty of budget options available. It is important to note that some car rental companies in Tonga only accept cash as payment. Always be sure to check whether the car company accept card as payment before pick-up.

Visitors from visa-exempt countries with a valid driving license are legally allowed to drive in Tonga on their overseas license (valid for driving in Tonga for up to 12 months from the date of arrival).

Visitors from non-visa-exempt countries are required to obtain a Visitor’s Driving License. For more information on how to get a Visitor’s Driving Licence in Tonga, see here.

Local Buses:

Travelling by bus is only available in Tongatapu and Vava’u.

Buses in Tongatapu operates Monday-Saturday from 7am to 5pm (finishing earlier on a Saturday), with routes on the east side of the island, the west side and around Nuku’alofa. Buses do not operate on a Sunday.

The buses on Vava’u are a less reliable as a transport method for getting around if you’re a tourist as buses tend to operate primarily as a school bus service, picking up the public along the way. Buses only run Monday to Friday with no schedule. It is best to pay cash (small notes and coins).

Taxis:

Taxis are only available in Tongatapu, Vava’u and sometimes on Lifuka and Foa islands in Ha’apai.

Taxis on Vava'u also offer tours around the island.

Taxis in Tongatapu have meters while taxis in Vava'u usually have set prices.

Taxi services are limited on Lifuka Island of Ha’apai. There are 2 taxi services here: Tom’s Taxi and Becky and Longo. Ha’apai Visitor Centre or the Mariner’s Cafe in Pangai offers up-to-date taxi information.

Taxis do not operate on Sundays.
