Niuafo’ou Island is part of The Niuas which comprises just three main islands - the others being Niuatoputapu and Tafahi. The island group is closer to Samoa than they are to the next nearest Tongan island group, Vava’u.
The population of the three islands is approximately 1,160 with 430 living on Niuafo’ou around 700 living on Niuatoputapu and 28 living on Tafahi.
This is a very remote island, so visitors will need to be almost totally self sufficient. However, those who make the journey will be greeted by traditions that have gone unchanged for centuries and pristine underwater worlds. At the center of the island is a huge lake of bubbling water. The coast is steep and rocky with just a few black sand beaches. It is famous for its special postal stamps.
