Starlink Update:

Following talk of Starlink being banned from Tonga during 2024, the Tonga Government has now granted Starlink a full operational license to provide high speed internet services to the country and the company will be allowed to operate normally with direct sales to the public and through authorised resellers.  See the following news item for more information.

Telephones

International Dialing Code for Tonga is +676. There are no local area codes. Get to the international operator by dialing 913, and directory inquiries are 910.

The two phone companies are Tonga Communications Corporation (TCC) and Digicel.

Public landline phones have been removed, including the phone companies. Reasonable rates are available on cellphone for international calls e.g. TOP4 for 30 minutes, TOP10 for 90 minutes.

Alternatively, most foreign cell phones set up for roaming will work in Tonga and reception is pretty good island-wide.

If you plan to buy a SIM card for a phone from another country, you will need to have the network unlocked on the cellphone.

Internet

Tonga is connected to the Southern Cross underwater fiber-optic cable that links Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and the United States. This has been known to fail, however it supplies high-speed internet to all the Island groups.

WiFi is free in many places and there are numerous internet cafes.

  • In 2016, internet failed in Tonga because an anchor drag damaged the underwater cable.
  • In 2022, internet failed because HTHH destroyed the domestic Fibre for Ha'apai and Vava'u. Starlink provided an earth station in Fiji and 50 free Starlinks to Tonga until the fibre was repaired.
  • In July 2024, internet failed again, however, no reason has been given as to why. See the comments (speech bubble icon under "Explore Country") for more details.

Couriers

If you need to mail packages or letters to Tonga, there are different courier company agents available on each Island (see the port communications section for details). The main 3 tend to be DHL, FedEx or UPS. Couriers are not cheap or quick and the time quoted for delivery is usually much longer in reality. All except NZ Post's courier service is charged as far as Nuku’alofa. If you give a Vava’u address you will be charged for domestic freight from Nuku’alofa to Vava’u on top of whatever you pay to the overseas agent.

DHL, FedEx, UPS - take 7 to 10 days, and are normally expensive. Courier companies charge a handling and clearance fee.

NZ Post - takes 10 to 14 days, normally not so expensive. You must employ a customs agent to clear the items.

Yacht in Transit:

See all addresses and contact details for 'yacht in transit' below. Duty and taxes may still apply, or inspection fees and handling charges.

If arranging delivery to Vava'u, yachts can use Cafe Tropicana's address with prior notification. Their private bag costs $95 annually, so a donation would be appreciated. Every time a ferry comes in please check at the post office.

It is recommended sending the following paperwork to the customs agent as soon as you get the tracking number:

  • Health Practicque
  • Skippers passport – color copy
  • Ships registration paper

DHL ONLY – please contact Agent first

FedEx ONLY - Western Union, Nuku’alofa
