HURRICANE BERYL: The island nations of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada were the worst affected by Hurricane Beryl at the start of July 2024. The Grenadines, Carriacou, Petit Martinique and Union Island were particularly hard hit. While the islands are recovering and all major marine services are back up and running (apart from on Union Island), cruisers should be aware that the islands are still in recovery mode and some services may still be limited or not available.
The Tobago Cays Marine Park (TCMP) lies just to the east of Mayreau and this huge Horseshoe Reef protects these deserted islets.
The Cays have been declared a wildlife reserve by the government and all visitors are urged to preserve and protect this unique natural resource. No fishing, jet skis, or anchoring of dinghies allowed.
Significant damages to corals caused by the anchoring of yachts in and around the Petit Tabac area of Tobago Cays has resulted in the Tobago Cays Marine Park management placing a ban on ALL anchoring in that area. A new nightly anchoring fee has also been imposed. See Docking for details.
For current rules, regulations and fees and a zone map on see the Tobago Cays Marine Park website.
Security
This is a wonderful place to stargaze and enjoy the freedom of anchoring safely behind the huge Atlantic swell. However, this idyllic spot has suffered from boardings, burglaries and armed assaults in the past.
Cruisers should remember that popular anchorages in the high season become secluded and isolated in "off-season" when few boats visit.
Cruisers are advised to anchor near other yachts and be more security conscious than they perhaps would otherwise have been. It is especially important to secure your boat at night, whether on board or not.
