HURRICANE BERYL: The island nations of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada were the worst affected by Hurricane Beryl at the start of July 2024. The Grenadines, Carriacou, Petit Martinique and Union Island were particularly hard hit. While the islands are recovering and all major marine services are back up and running (apart from on Union Island), cruisers should be aware that the islands are still in recovery mode and some services may still be limited or not available.
This large, friendly fishing village is situated on the Leeward (west) coast of St Vincent, just south of the volcano of Soufrière. Commonly referred to as just "Chato", it is the fourth largest town in the country.
The bay is very green and beautiful, with palm trees hanging over the water and local families fishing and playing on the beach.
Dinghy theft is rife, particularly in Cumberland Bay - so make sure you securely lock your dinghy while at anchor or on a mooring as well as when going ashore. Petty theft continues to be a problem so ensure any valuable, loose items are well secured on deck or below before going ashore or retiring for the night.
There have also been armed robberies on yachts here in the past but no serious incidents reported since 2016.
Local attractions include Trinity Falls, Dark View Falls and rock carvings which are an archaeological find and are believed to have been left by Carib Indians.
