Local History - The anchorage adjacent to the harbour mouth was where Bartholomew Dias stopped in February 1488 and went ashore, only to receive a hostile reception from local herders. This was the first landing of a European in what is today South Africa. In 1988, a replica caravel was sailed from Portugal to Mossel Bay in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Dias's voyage. It now resides in the wonderful local museum. There, you can also learn about the area's role in human heritage - nearby palaeo-anthropological sites have provided evidence of some of the earliest examples of modern Homo sapiens behaviour, dating from some 164,000 years ago.
