Explore: Hout Bay
General Info
Description:
Hout Bay is surrounded by spectacular mountains and sports a picturesque harbor for a small fishing fleet. It lies on the western coast of the Cape Peninsula, 15NM south of Cape Town harbor.
Only 30 minutes from Cape Town, it’s a popular place for visiting yachts spending some time in the area and rates are much lower than in the city.
Entrance Notes and Cautions:
Hout Bay Yacht Club welcomes visiting yachts. Hout Bay Harbor does not maintain a dedicated radio watch. The HBYC Marina Manager might be contactable on CH-71 (Call sign Hout Bay Marina). Alternatively, you could try contacting yachts in the marina (again CH-71 “yachts in Hout Bay Marina”) for any advice regarding your approach and mooring. Approach waypoints can be found on the marina website.
Hout Bay does suffer from very strong Katabatic winds from the East, kicking up waves and spray. Visiting yachts should be sure to find as protected a berth as possible in the marina to avoid problems when the Katabatics strike.
Position:
34°03’03″S, 18°21’01E (harbor entrance).
Clearance
If you moor at Simonstown or Hout Bay you will have to complete clearance in Cape Town taking your whole crew with you.
See Cape Town Clearance for details.
When departing from South Africa for a foreign destination skippers must obtain a clearance certificate from the yacht club to show all fees have been paid and visit the necessary officials in Cape Town.

Docking
Marinas:
For berthing contact Craig Dunlop – Ph: 021 790 3110 – Email: [email protected]
Hout Bay Yacht Club welcomes visiting yachts and can accommodate vessels up to 54ft. The extended harbor wall protects the marina from any surge.
On arrival yachts should proceed to their allocated mooring as arranged with the Marina Manager. If in doubt tie up in any vacant berth on the south side of the southern walk-on jetty and contact the marina manager at the earliest opportunity.
All yachts must sign their craft in and out in the yacht club register at the Marina.
Port:
It is possible to berth in the main commercial port if you are looking for a cheaper alternative or are too big to fit into the yacht club marina. Contact the Port Captain. There are substantial docks with large tires as fenders so a fender-board is recommended. Or you might be able to raft up to a fishing boat. Electricity and water is shared with commercial boats. Noisy when the fishing fleet works. No security gates, no showers.
Ashore:
Hout Bay is very scenic and the village has laundry service, rental cars, hardware shops, tool hire, spare parts, supermarkets, pharmacy and a great number of restaurants within easy walking distance of the yacht club. It is a 30 minute drive into central Cape Town. The village usually has several Uber drivers on standby and MiCity buses run frequently from Hout Bay to Cape Town.
Tradesmen will visit here from Cape Town.
Security:
The town and port are reasonably safe even after dark and there are many security guards watching this upmarket tourist place and the pretty homes.
