Description:
Tangier, a Moroccan port on the Strait of Gibraltar, has been a strategic gateway between Africa and Europe since Phoenician times.
It is a bustling city with a rich cultural heritage. There are many landmarks and attractions to explore, from the Grand Socco market to the Kasbah and its museum.
For the new visitor to Morocco, Tangier can be a bit of a shock. Children beg for money, and ‘Official’ guides pester everywhere. In these respects, Tangier is untypical of other places in Morocco. However, it is an interesting and lively place to visit with a beautiful Medina. The hassle is tolerable, especially if you arrange a Moroccan companion or hire a (professional) guide.
Entrance Notes and Cautions:
Be aware that on the approach to Tangier, navigation marks are routinely off station or missing.
According to Moroccan law, it is strictly forbidden to anchor boats within 500 meters of the Tanja Marina Bay International (Tangier Marina) breakwaters. This regulation is in place to ensure the safety of boats entering and exiting the marina as well as to protect the marine environment and the local ecosystem.
Cruiser Highlights:
Tanja Marina Bay International is a modern marina with first-class facilities that has become one of the city's most popular destinations for locals and visitors alike. It has become a hub for boating and sailing enthusiasts from around the world. It has over 1400 berths for boats of all sizes and offers good protection. It is close to the town centre and there is a supermarket and shopping mall within walking distance. If you can get a berth in the marina, it is well worth the stop.
If you have ever considered a visit to Morocco, this report by long-term liveaboard Alison Gieschen (2023) will most definitely tempt you.
